Considerations When Choosing An Aesthetic Skin Clinic

Aesthetic Treatments In Oxford

There are many places in which to have aesthetic skin procedures within the Oxford and the Oxfordshire area, however, choosing the right one for you can feel daunting. Being prepared to ask the right questions will be key to helping you choose the right clinic and have a safe and successful experience. Here we discuss everything you need to take into account when you are looking to have an aesthetic procedure.

Considerations for comparing and choosing an aesthetic skin clinic:

Firstly, preparation is key and there is no need to rush into anything. Take your time to research the right clinic and practitioner for you. This will help reduce your risk of stumbling into the wrong hands and being misinformed about any potential treatments.

  • Recommendation

If possible, take a recommendation from someone you trust, or seek reviews of the person and company. Here are our latest aesthetic clinic reviews.

  • DON'T be driven by price

Aesthetic treatments should never be decided upon solely because of the price and especially not where you are offered a “deal” or “special offer”. Be very cautious of any clinic or practitioner trying to persuade you through special offers that are time limited.

Compare apples with apples to avoid rotten eggs. By this we mean find out what you are getting for the price and make sure it is the same in your comparison - You may find it useful to read one of our journal posts on “What To Consider When Searching For The Price of Botox and Aesthetic Skin Treatments”.

  • Always Have A Consultation First

Make sure a consultation is provided in person with the practitioner, before you have any treatments, and that you are not obliged to have a treatment if you attend. Some clinics will charge for this vital stage of the process and some may charge and keep the consultation fee on account to use towards any treatments or skin products.

  • Do They Have A Medical Background?

If you are potentially interested in injectable treatments such as Botox or Dermal Fillers, ensure the practitioner has a professional medical background, such as a Doctor, Nurse or Dentist. Don’t be afraid to ask for their professional registration number before meeting and look them up on their professional register to make sure they are still are still active and regulated: GMC for doctors; NMC for Nurses; GDC for Dentists.

  • Practitioner Experience

Ask about their experience and be specific on this. Have they been practising aesthetic medicine for 10 years but only for a couple of hours a week? Is it their main speciality or do they work in the NHS most of the time? Ideally, you will want a practitioner who is dedicated solely to the field of medical aesthetics.

  • What Are The Risks?

At your consultation, ask about the risks of the treatments being discussed. These should be fully disclosed and discussed as well as written for you to read. Knowing all the risks, including any downtime, allows you to make an informed decision on whether to have a treatment or not. Simply giving you a consent form to sign is not acceptable.

  • Is There A Complications Plan?

What happens if something doesn’t go to plan? Does the practitioner know how to deal with each complication and have a plan of action? Don’t simply be fobbed off with “it won’t happen”. or “Go and see your GP/Hospital” Quite often you will require medication to deal with a complication, so ensure they are a prescribing practitioner and can deal with something straight away. It is not good seeing your GP as they will not usually have any experience in dealing with aesthetic treatment complications - Plus it’s not up to the NHS to deal with.

  • Insurance

Ask about their professional indemnity insurance. Although medical aesthetic treatments are generally considered safe, when administered by the appropriate professional, there are still risks involved. You need to know if the practitioner and treatment are covered by insurance if something goes wrong and can’t be dealt with by the practitioner.

  • Expectations

Trust and mutual understanding of expectations are paramount to the success of your treatments. Explain the details of what you would and would not like to achieve. Ask your practitioner to explain what you can expect to achieve with any given treatment. Although a practitioner can never guarantee a particular result, they should be able to advise you of the likely outcome for you in particular.

  • Trust your instincts;

If it doesn’t feel right, don’t do it.
