What Rosacea?

Rosacea is a common skin condition with varying degrees of severity. Many people do not even know they have the beginning of rosacea symptoms and simply feel they are a little rosy in the cheeks and nose.

Rosacea is considered a skin barrier disorder whereby the barrier of the skin is not effectively keeping out skin irritants and micro-organisms, nor effectively keeping in skin hydration.

What Are The Symptoms Of Rosacea?

Symptoms include:

  • Facial flushing to the central parts of the face such as nose, cheeks and chin. This can be intermittent or persistent.

  • Visible broken veins, also known as spider veins, appear in the central parts of the face.

  • Swollen spots or bumps, often confused with acne spots can appear on the cheeks and nose. This is a sign of microorganism skin infection and requires treatment.

  • A burning sensation of the skin in the central parts of the face.

  • Skin hydration changes. Mostly the Rosacea skin will present with dehydration, even flakey, with a tight feeling. Occasionally the skin will overcompensate and overproduce sebum, resulting in an excessively oily skin.

  • Eye irritation. Some people with Rosacea may experience Ocular dryness, swelling and irritation that requires medical treatment.

  • Enlarged nose. This is known as Rosacea Rhinophyma, where the constant skin irritation of the nose compensates with a thickening of dermal skin tissues, distorting the appearance of the nose.

What causes Rosacea?

Whilst the exact causes of Rosacea are not known, there are certain risk factors that could encourage its progression. An effective treatment plan should include targeting as many of these risk factors as possible. Your risk factors depend on the particular cause which include:

  • Hereditary genes - Unfortunately for unknown reasons, some people are just predisposed Rosacea appearing as part of their genetics.

  • Pregnancy-an increase in pregnancy oestrogen hormones during pregnancy can lead to skin barrier changes and broken blood vessels. Treatments cannot be provided during pregnancy however, In most people, Rosacea symptoms will heal on their own after delivery with the drop in oestrogen levels.

  • Menopause - The menopause can have significant effects upon the skin thickness, condition, and barrier function, resulting in an onset of facial flushing.

  • Sun exposure - Excessive repeated sun exposure can disturb skin barrier function, enlarge your blood vessels and thin the surrounding supportive skin tissues.

  • Alcohol -Moderate or occasional alcohol consumption can cause your skin to flush due to the enlargement of blood vessels. However this is not necessarily a direct cause of Rosacea but may exacerbate symptoms.

  • Smoking - Smoking has a profound effect on the skin barrier function, thinning the skin and increasing blood pressure.

  • Skin irritants and injury - Continuously exposing the skin to irritants such as perfumed products and additives could distort the skin barrier function and create skin inflammation.
